The Turtle Tank water level sits just below the basking platform which is at 10″ (25cm) on 18” (46cm) height tanks and 16″ (41cm) on 24” (61cm), on a standard tank. The reason for keeping the water level just below the basking platform is to prevent algae growth on the underside of the platform.
A few tips on maintaining Turtle Terrapin Tanks include ensuring the water level is just below the basking area point and a sheet of polystyrene is placed under the tank at all times. If you have more than one turtle, which will be growing in size, we recommend getting a larger tank the first time.

Turtle Terrapin Aquarium Care and Recommendations:
- At a minimum, the water should be at least 1.5 to 2 times as deep as your turtle’s shell is long. For example, a 4” (10cm) turtle should have a tank with a minimum water depth of 6” (15cm).
- The length of the Turtle Terrapin Tank should be at least 5 times the length of the turtle.
- The width of the Turtle Aquarium should be at least 2 to 3 times the length of the turtle.
- The Basking area and ramp should allow the turtle to climb completely out of the water.
- Basking (heat) light and a UVB light. We recommend the D3 UV Basking Lamp (80 watts) which provides UVB, UVA, and heat from a single bulb. The basking light should be set on an automatic timer to simulate a natural Photoperiod.
- Heater at one end of the Turtle Tank only. The water temperature should be between 24°C-29°C.
- Thermometer to keep track of the temperature.
- An external water filter is essential. The filter should be upgraded to a more powerful one as the turtle grows larger. We do supply aquarium filters and heaters.
- Water needs to be changed frequently. A siphon will assist with the removal of wastes from the tank. Change approximately 25-50% of the water weekly.
- Empty and clean the Turtle Aquarium monthly.
- Consider feeding your turtle out of the main tank in a smaller container/tank or on a basking platform.

Please note that most likely your new turtle aquarium will be delivered with silicone still curing and you might be required to wait a few days before putting the water in. For the water fill-in date please check a sticker on the tank upon delivery.
Aquarium Maintenance Note: To extend the lifespan of the flat closed hinged hood we recommend keeping it dry by covering any excess openings on the top of the turtle aquarium (under the flap). Any water droplets on the hood flaps from the inside is a sign of excessive moisture which can cause damage to the wood panels in the long run. We recommend always wiping any water droplet from the inside of the hood to keep it dry. The extend the lifespan of the turtle aquarium cabinet please avoid any spillages and wipe them off as soon as they occur.
